Interview: 5 Questions with Fashion Designer Alberto Annibali

Monday, July 18

Maytee: Tell us about your recent collection?

Alberto: My last collection was the S/S 11, where I worked trying to create a small capsula where all the dress and jacket can match one with another one in a modern way, mixing small little dress with men's tailoring inspired jackets, or cocktail dresses with a matching small jacket, very 60's but also very contemporary to me, as the bon ton is now definitely came back in our wardrobe (finally!).

I choose then light color, as Jade, camel, coral pink, beige, white and nude pink, for silk twill, silk crepe de chine silk and cotton voile, washed silk with a touch on cotton canvas, rustic but very in contrast with the silk.

Maytee: What is the design process like for Alberto Annibali?

Alberto: Well, I usually get inspired by people, on the street or on pictures I like. From there I start to think about what I could do, what colors, fabrics and definitely what shapes. I like to work doing moulage so I can see the effect of a fabric or of a design straight on the mannequin. After that I try to create the pattern to explain to the pattern maker what kind of volumes or shape I have in my mind. After this o start to see the fabrics I like and than imagine which fabric match with the designs.

Thia is the most interesting part. I also like to wash some fabric to see what is the effect that can have, like softer wrinkled or just different from the beginning.

After that I have to see the samples and check if the proportions and everything is exactly as I imagine, but to be sincere several times it happens that when I see some mistake (manufacturing or reaction of the fabric) I am more impressed by that then when everything is perfect. Basically a mistake could become something very interesting!

Maytee: What are some of your upcoming projects for 2011?

Alberto: At the moment I stop the wholesale because I had some problems with my company.

It is hard for young designers to keep going without big investments, so if you do not sale enough you need to invest your personal money and sometimes it is hard.

So I decided to work for this year only for private clients where i can actually create a dress in a proper way, making them happy because they have something special and unique.

I believe we lost this feeling, create fashion to make people happy to wear it and not only to make money or to be popular.

I am a bit old style but I like it!

Maytee: What advice do you have for those following your footsteps?

Alberto: First thing is to believe in yourself, second never say "it is hard to me to do it" and basically always work with your heart, following your passion!( fashion is a passion then a job)

Maytee: Where can we purchase Alberto Annibali?

Alberto: Now Alberto Annibali is by request and soon it will be on line on a social shopping site with exclusive products.
