Interview: 5 Questions with Fashion Photographer Jason Bassett

Maytee: Who is Jason? Tell us a bit about yourself!

Jason: Haha, great question. I am known for last minute photo shoots with objects and subjects that immediately inspire me to create. The random and simplistic composition leads my inventiveness to a dynamic range of genres. Editorial, Beauty, Fashion, Boudoir, Commercial, Candid, Band/Music are the categories that enthrall me to take amazing people and turn them into subjects for breathtaking art. My photography and film work, as is my lifestyle, is a calm burst of liveliness. Whether natural light or strobe-lit, my boldness comes from the excitement of just feeling how a portrait should look and going for that moment. “Love is the only feeling worth feeling”, and I want’s others to feel. To feel loved, inspired, and driven.

Maytee: What inspires you?

Jason: The photographers of today’s world inspire me. I truly feel God has let me become this creative person. Chase Jarvis, Zack Arias, and other greats that came from nothing to inspiring people everyday. I love the fact that I can create a fantasy or bring a story to life. Whether still or cinema.. I enjoy showing a sense of confidence and sexuality.

Maytee: What has been your most memorable photo shoot, and why?

Jason: Most memorable!? How about the one I just had! It was actually a film, but a photoshoot as well. I decided to take photos after seeing the gorgeous model in front of me. We arrived to a public park (very secluded though) very early. I dropped my camera, tripod, fell of a skateboard ramp and swelled my hip, tore my toes up on the mossy rocks, and watched the model endure scrapes on her skin as well. But that wasn’t the memorable part. It was the cohesiveness and flow of the whole day. I have been filming and scouting for 2 weeks getting this right. I even had a fishing rod that was a broken segment of a tree! Which was a surprise to me the day of the shoot by my assistant who knew I was worried I wouldn’t get it done. After I saw the model’s shirt all wet and her breast showing, I KNEW I had to take a shot and turn this into some form of a photoshoot. The day was simply awesome. Nothing went wrong.

Maytee: For inspiring fashion photographers, What is the best advice you could give someone to break into the industry?

Jason: I do very little fashion work lately, but I was into it a year ago. My advice is to check magazines and see how people are shooting commercially. What style of photography is selling and what are clients selecting to put in their ads. This is commonly overlooked. Don’t be afraid to fail, and never be afraid to risk or of what happens next! Just do it! Step away from technicalities and focus on forming a style of work. This is developed your entire life.

Maytee: Where can people see more of your work?

Jason: www.lovetobestill.com is where you can find all of my work, social links, and updates on what I am doing! Thank you Maytee for this opportunity to share.
